NUMBER FAQ

If you drive a vehicle used for business that meets any of the following requirements you need to aquire a DOT number for your vehicle.

Requirements:

  • Commercial Vehicle with Gross Weight Rating of 10,000 lbs or more and crosses state lines.
  • Commercial Vehicle with Gross Weight Rating of 17,000 lbs or more and doesn't cross state lines.
  • Transporting over 8 passengers, including the driver, for compensation.
  • Transporting over 15 passengers, including the driver, without compensation.
  • Transporting some specific specified hazardous materials.

If you drive a commercial vehicle across state lines that meets any of the following requirements you need to aquire a MC number for your vehicle.

Requirements:

  • Operating as a for-hire carrier, carrying for compensation.
  • Transporting passengers accross state lines for compensation.
  • Transporting federally regulated commodities owned by others for compensation.

Excemptions:

  • Private carriers, transporting their own cargo.
  • For-hire carriers hauling exempt commodities.
  • Carriers operating exclusively within commercial zones.

If you drive a commerical vehicle from one point within Pennsylvania to another point within Pennsylvania for compensation, and it meets any of the following requirements, you need to aquire a Pennsylvania PUC number for your vehicle.

Requirements:

  • Operating as a for-hire carrier (all trucking companies), carrying for compensation.
  • Moving companies transporting housefold goods.
  • Taxis and schedule route bus services.
  • Some other types of passenger vehicles.

STATE PERMIT FAQ

Requirements:

  • Travel within the state of Kentucky.
  • Truck weighs 60,000lbs or more.

Excemptions:

  • Farm Liscensed Vehicles.

Requirements:

  • Travel within the state of New York.
  • Truck weighs 18,000lbs or more loaded, or 8,000lbs or more unloaded.

Excemptions:

Requirements:

  • Travel within the state of New Mexico or Oregon.
  • Truck weighs 26,000lbs or more.

Excemptions:

  • Farm Liscensed Vehicles.

It depends on which state permit(s) you hold:

  • New Mexico & Oregon: Renew every year (annually).
  • New York: Renew every three years.
  • Kentucky: Never needs renewed.
