DUE DATE &
TAX YEAR
The form 2290 follows the federal tax year of July 1 to June 30 of the following year. Each year the tax for the current year is due by August 31st for any trucks that you owned in July of the current tax year.
If you purchase a truck at another time throughout the tax year, the amount of the tax is prorated for each month of the current year. If you replace your current truck, you can apply for a credit for the months of the current year that you did not own the truck but already paid the tax for. This credit can be applied to what you owe for the replacement truck or can be refunded to you if you do not replace your truck.
